Sketched - Babies

"Your comedy suffers from MadTV syndrome"

submission: Sketched - Babies
date: November 13, 2009

I haven't watched all your sketches, but from what I've seen, literally every situation revolves around a character or characters with a ridiculous point of view or disposition, and the rest of the characters being dismayed by that person. So the formula seems to be: put a supposedly normal person with abnormal people - and have the voice acting be loosely scripted.

MadTV has the exact same formula. Which is better between the two I couldn't say. The animation is choppy, the art is all over the place, and the voice acting - while trying to sound like natural conversation - sounds very forced. Yes people stutter, and interrupt each other, and don't complete their sentences sometimes, but when 80% of the lines sound like that it becomes exactly the opposite of natural conversation. It's not all bad though. There's a few hints of what I consider comedy in there, but I think this series has a long way to go. I believe its got potential, hence the 5 instead of a 0 or a 1. This is all opinion though, so take it as you will.

Author's Response:

Thanks for the review. Some valid points in there and it's definitely things to consider for our next series. In all honesty the formula for this series may not change much any time soon as it is that formula that those considering the pilot have enjoyed, but it's all a matter of taste so I'm not in any way trying to say you are wrong. I can see what your saying with "MadTV syndrome" (ouch by the way, haha) because that is inherently sketch comedy... possibly not sketch comedy at its finest, but for the most part it is what it is.

I can't really make excuses for our style or humor being the way it is, because we are really just making the kind of things that we ourselves enjoy, so not everyone is going to enjoy it as well, but the main thing is that we all have fun, otherwise what's the point?

It's blatantly obvious you put a lot of time into making this movie look sexy. You've maintained your unique and original style, but upped the detail exponentially. I dug it, so keep up the good work.

Cave of Wonders

"I had a blast"

It was a great old-school style side-scroller. I liked the idea you had with you having to build your own way up to get to the third boss, and the Metroid/Megaman style "escape as the last boss" was cool. A few glitches made my kill myself, but I got it done. I uh...... beat it in 666 seconds. Great work and a good kick-off to the Po3 event. I'm going to go repent for my sins and read the bible.

One thing this movie had that you don't really see to often in comedy is frame by frame animation. The drawing was a bit rough here and there, but the scenes you put a lot of effort into really paid off. I got some good laughs from this as well, so well done. I suggest you get rid of the green Border lines you used to show you where the stage ends though. A few scenes had them in there, and it was kind of funky. Other than that, it was swell.

The first thing I'd do if I were you is get rid of that stupid border that you put around every one of your movies. It's distracting, pointless, and makes your animations look very cheap and unprofessional.

The character designs were decent, and the voice acting was alright (for the most part), but the animations were extremely basic. Any time there was a chance to show some action, you would cut away and throw in a sound effect. As for the jokes, I didn't find the movie funny, but that doesn't mean it's bad. Just because I don't find Spongebob Squarepants funny doesn't mean it shouldn't exist.

However, I'm going to ask, even though I'm positive you aren't going to listen. Please, for the love of god, Don't make Left4LOL 2. Just because the first one was "popular" doesn't mean it warrants a second.

Author's Response:

I'm afraid yes, I wont listen on left4lol 2. Not just because I've already started it and have one segment almost done, but because this project isnt going to be like the first one. It's going to be something completely different and original, but most of all what I have planned is just a really good and funny idea.

Yes my animations were quite basic in this one I'm afraid, I was only able to pull off 60% of what I intended unfortunately as the fight scenes were supposed to be longer than they were, but I burned out and also noticed some of my limitations as an animator. Something I'm trying to work on improving as we speak.

As for the boarder its actually something that really helps me out as an animator, why? Ha I don't know. Kind of a security blanket maybe, but I am working on phasing it out for some future projects that I intend on having a more professional quality.

Thanks for the honest critique. Nice to hear folks actually say what they don't like instead of saying 'U suck, stop trying'.

A view of a world through the eyes of feverish delirium. Your use of mixed media, disturbing imagery, and morbid fantasy are extremely provocative. Your character design alone both intrigues and horrifies me. I'll be looking forward to Anus Boy III.

You had a good concept going there, and the animation fit the song wonderfully. I'm sure toiling away with a mouse must've been grueling, but it definitely paid off. I'm looking forward to seeing what you'll be producing with a tablet. Keep it up.

I've been watching your movies since the Grim Reaper show first showed up on the portal, and I have to say; your stuff is still as funny and interesting as ever. I can only imagine how annoying making that monster must have been, but the end result was 100% pretty cool. Keep on keepin' on man.

Pleasure Island 2

"I timeless classic"

submission: Pleasure Island 2
date: July 24, 2009

If anything, rest assured that this will be your Moby Dick. Even if you die alone, penniless in the gutters of Rio De Janeiro, some day like-minded scholars will look back upon your work and sing praises that should have been sung before your untimely demise. Media classes will be prescribed a strict regimen of Time-period classics to peruse, and Pleasure Island 2 will be at the top of the list.

The Transformer

"Hot damn"

submission: The Transformer

Creating an old 1900's automobile transformation must have been quite the mind fuck. I see you've departed from the much-complained-about-but-not-remotel y-relevant "talking head" formula, that everyone loves to bitch about. This film was full of frame by frame and interesting camera angles, so if anyone complains this time, they're a fucking dickhead. Another professionally done and unique animation. Always a pleasure.
